Arrow Precision celebrate a double success

Arrow Precision - a Worldwide "cottage industry"

The Hinckley based components manufacturer became the first exhibitor at the Autosport Engineering Show at the NEC to win two awards.

Arrow Precision, based in Barleyfield were honoured for their stand and best technical innovation, a connecting rod used in motor racing.

Director Ros Arnold said: "We are very proud of this and feel that in the current climate, particularly in this area where there is a strong manufacturing history and several engineering companies have been lost, this is a little bit of good news."

Ultra strength M2000

The successful connecting rod is made of a new ultra strength steel M2000 which has been developed by engine component design specialists Zzuhl with whom Arrow has a technical partnership.

Managing director Ian Arnold said: "Whilst many materials of similarly high strength suffer from lack of ductility, M2000 retains a significant degree of plastic elongation coupled with unusually low notch sensitivity for a material of this strength. Notch sensitivity is a measure of how a material is affected by notches and other stress raisers such as threads."

The business was started in 1971 by Ian's father David at a garage in Hollycroft Crescent. It later moved to Coventry but returned in 1990 to Hinckley at its present 20,000 sq ft premises on the Hinckley Fields Industrial Estate where it employs 63 people. Components are exported to several countries with a market for high-tech precision products.

Ian added: "It's a cottage industry but a worldwide one. If it's got an engine, we're there and can also cater for one-off requests for parts for 1920s and 1930s classic cars for instance."
